PUDUCHERRY: Ten students and a teacher will represent Puducherry in the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth Programme.

Director of School Education S. Sundaravadivelu said the youth exchange programme was started in 2007 to promote friendly relations between the youth in Japan and East Asian countries.

The main objective of the programme was to facilitate cultural exchange between students of the invited country and Japan, besides promoting understanding in politics, economics, friendly relations, culture and society. Students would visit museums, research centres and historical cities in Japan.

To facilitate interaction and get cultural experience, the students would stay in houses of the Japanese, the release said.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development had called for applications from all States and Union Territories for the programme. In Puducherry, applications were received from 149 students and 17 teachers. Out of this, 42 students – 19 boys and 23 girls – and three teachers were selected on the basis of special talent. The selection team recommended the shortlisted persons to the Ministry.

The Ministry selected 10 students and a teacher for the first two batches of the programme. Of this, seven students and the teacher would travel to Japan in the first batch from May 19 to 28.

The other three students would visit Japan from June 2 to 11, the release said.
